Cyber Space

Description

An assignment for my painting class (which I totally goofed because the wood cut was too small. The piece is about 26. in x 26 in. The required size was 30 in. x 32 in.). The piece deals specifically with Identity and I wanted it to make it not just mine, but everyone else's.

Let's face it, the Digital Age is inevitable for all of us. We are forced into it whether we like it or not. It doesn't matter if we upgraded from a flip-phone to a touch-screen or if you used Windows 98 and suddenly upgraded to Windows 8. We progress with updates and digital evolution.

How one is in Cyber Space is completely up to them. Each strand represents either a specific personality or a social connection one has on the Internet. Most of the time, people get so caught up in so many different sites and behave differently that their true selves often get shrouded in mystery from being so much into the Internet (that is beside the fact that their identity is hidden by a screen and people feel that they can do whatever they want on the Internet anyways). The lower strands are more prominent so that the viewer has the feeling that the painting is pulling them into the world that the figure emerges from (a metaphor for being pulled in deeper and deeper into the Digital Age). The figure is neither male nor female. The numbers represent the Internet as a whole (since basic data is formed with ones and zeros).

I also wanted the picture to be ripping open, as if it's a portal to a different dimension/world. After all, Cyber Space IS different from the real world we live in.

NOTE: If you are willing to purchase the original piece, please send me a note and we can discuss from there.

Also, the inverted version (which looks a LOT creepier) can be found here: Cyber Space (Inverted)

looks like you did well with the theme of the assignment.

do the strips of 1's and 0's say anything? (like lines of code, obviously.)
i hope you get an awesome grade!
